When former Indaco chef Mark Bolchoz announced the opening of Cane Pazzo — a Roman-inspired osteria in the heart of Hanahan — Charleston’s food scene took notice. As the design studio behind the brand, we were tasked with translating Cane Pazzo’s warm, authentic energy into a visual identity and environment that felt timeless, inviting, and rooted in the Lowcountry.
From the beginning, the vision for Cane Pazzo was clear: a Hanahan restaurant that captured the feel of a traditional Italian osteria while celebrating the region’s seasonal produce. We drew inspiration from old-world trattorias, blending rustic textures with modern typography and color choices that reflect both Mark’s heritage and his years of culinary experience.
The restaurant’s black-and-white family photos, vintage-style wordmark, and moody, golden palette were all intentional decisions designed to feel at home in Main Line Italian restaurants, yet grounded in Charleston’s warm, social spirit.
Much like Cane Pazzo’s menu — which shifts with the seasons and includes dishes like ricotta triangoli and corn risotto — our branding process was iterative and collaborative. Co-Owner Ariana Bolchez was the visionary behind the word mark and the dog illustration, and we stepped in to help build out the rest of the brand.
Cane Pazzo is quickly becoming competition for the best restuarants in downtown Charleston for those willing to make the quick drive north, only 15 minutes from downtown Charleston. The brand needed to reflect this — not just aesthetically, but emotionally.
To brand ties together with the interior desing of the space: the leather banquettes, the warm glow of the wood-fired oven, and the intimacy of a restaurant built by a couple for their own community.
A unique detail of this project? Nearly every collaborator was local. From photographers to copywriters to the folks at the Chef’s Store Charleston, who helped source some of the early equipment, Cane Pazzo was a project deeply connected to its place.
We’re proud to have helped bring this vision to life — not just as designers, but as neighbors.
